Henri was Claire’s favorite teacher at the Bennington Low Residency Writing Program. He helped her discover her voice. He is a sensitive man. His sharp observation of the natural world is one of his many strengths. His observation of the crows is clear and chilling. I identified with the kitten, yet saw the crows more clearly. I used torn and deckled paper to form the images of the crows, adding touches of color in some, but mostly reveling in the rich play between black, gray and white. With monotype you can achieve a subtly of grays, a richness of color, perhaps because unlike a drawing, or painting, the pigment is pushed into the paper, becomes part of it, as the paper travels through the press. The black crows, the white paper.
